The number of gain stages.........
1 gain stage invert polarity, 2 gain stages non invert polarity, 3 gain stages invert polarity, 4 gain stages non invert.....You get the picture.

Sorry, I get the pattern, but I'm not technical enough to understand how it applies to my problem. Why does changing the polarity on just one amp (either left or right but not both) fix the problem? Any why did it not apply to the previous owner?
The previous owner knew something was wrong, but didn't know what. He thought that's the way it sounded and didn't like it. Some would never know there was a problem at all.

That's because it is irrelevant to your problem and technically inaccurate anyway. There is not enough information about the amplifier to determine where the problem is located, but it could be as simple as having the output transformer secondary misswired. It sounds like a very simple fix. Compare the color code of the wires going to the respective speaker taps e.g., 4, 8, 16 ohms from one amp to the other or post photos of the amps illustrating the speaker tap connections.
