Greetings All,
I have a yamaha M-4 that has functioned very well for 7 years I've owned it. It has had a fairly polite life with me powering KLH 5s and DIY GR Research AV2 in small to medium rooms. I recently stumbled upon a pair of Focal 836V and pulled the trigger. I should get them next week. They are a lot of speaker with 5 drivers, 3 ports and a tweeter. Also I recently moved into a new house with an open floor plan (i.e.) bedrooms and the rest is open space.) It is hard to really describe but I have at least 700 sq feet of open space if not more depending on how you count the kitchen that has a walkway into it and a breakfast bar. So conservatively 700 sq feet and liberally 1200 sq feet. Although, and I don't know if this matters, the room is rectangular and not square. The speakers and listening area face the narrower side of the rectangle and are closer to one wall than the other, much closer. The speakers are rated 92 db sensitivity and 8 ohms. The M-4 is 120 watts at 8 ohms. The proof will be in the pudding of course but does anyone have an opinion regarding the M4 being up to the challenge of powering these speakers?
It is not too late for me to change the order and get the smaller 826V. It is not too late to change the order to the 826V.
I posted his on the speaker forum so sorry for the double post
Thanks for your thoughts.
Nate

Good purchase. You will have fun experimenting w/ room placement.
I don't own a pair, but I know them very well. They are big sonic upgrade over the pair I use (814V) in the den. Your Yamaha will drive them effortlessly (if the caps are not in dire need of replacement).
If you get the chance, try them with a Naim integrated. In many ways, the two products were made for each other.
Play around a little with room placement, but in my experience, the 836s are not the fussiest speaker out there. I have had them sounding splendid in a cube of a room.
I love NAIM but they are proud of their products. I used to own a NAIM cd 3 and sold it when I stopped listening to cds. NAIM has a budget integrated out now but probably not up to powering these speakers.

The current Naim Nait will power your speakers with ease.
Your speakers need only a few watts to power your speakers to about 100 db in a larger room.
Wattage rating doesn't tell too much of the story. You will be surprised at what the Nait will do with your speakers.
IME, the current Naim entry-level CD spinner is the best out there!
I've owned a pair of Focals, the 714, which were wonderful, not quite as big as yours, but in general, you have to be ready to paly around A LOT with room placement to get the bass right. All the reviews I've read about Focals is that they can sound a bit bass heavy, so definitely far from the corners and walls! They'll challenge and reward in equal measure! Have fun.
I did not find that they needed a lot of current and power to play well. The better the amplification though, the better the result !!
