I hope it's worth a Schiit . . .
The last one I tried, and liked a lot, was a Creek many years ago.

Follow Ups:
when using a passive pre, no need to spend big bucks...
I got the Emotiva Control Freak in xlr a few months ago to use when I send in my preamp for service. While I need the additional gain of my preamp for analog, I don't for CD and the Emotiva works very well. I don't think I'm missing much of anything, if anything at all. Love the way the volume control feels. I could see going passive if digital/CD was my only source.

You made me go to their site to check this out. I use Emo powered speakers with a Dragonfly DAC for my PC. I adjust volume with tiny buttons on the top row of my keyboard, which works but.... I'll be getting one of these! Thanks. I haven't been on their website for awhile.
Henry,
No idea if it will work out for you - hope it does. A friend bought one a few months back, and for what it cost it punches way above its weight class. Does a nice job of getting out of the way of the music.
Hope you enjoy it.
Mike
Will post when I've heard it in my system.

Just bought one like this. With just one input an paralleled output - 60 steps attenuator and Vishay Zfoil resistors. Very transparent sounding. It`s easy to hear the shortcomings of my active linestage compared to this.

Can't tell from the photo.
Thanks.

Nice.
...I have an Asgard 2 headphone amp and I've been very happy with it.

I love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich
Please post your impressions after you listen to it in your system. As I've posted before, I don't know how Schiit can afford to sell them so cheap. The enclosure and knobs alone would cost me more than that for a DIY passive.
Good luck with it!
But they are out of stock.

I've been tempted a time or two by all the positive press their DACs have received, here on the Asylum, and elsewhere.
I'm still living in the digital dark ages (early CD players, Audio Alchemy DAC, etc.). When I get curious about more modern offerings, I buy more LPs instead.
Go ahead, call me a Luddite.
Looking forward to your results with the SYS, Opus.

and it is the best passive I have tried and it is pretty cheap. I got mine upgraded with the caddock resistors but it is a shunt volume control so only the caddock is directly in the signal path.
I prefer it over the transformer based ones I have heard and the stepped resistor based ones as well.
I use a 1/4 watt metal film resistor in path and a 49k variable to shunt. Works great as a source attenuator to add remote control to pieces that come without it. Like vintage tube gear.

As long as the source has a high enough output I have found this to be the least damaging way to do a passive preamp. We found it suffered compared to a really good active preamp (Einstein "The Tube") with a low output MC cartridge and not enough gain from the phono stage. Put in a high output MC though and it sounded pretty close to the Einstein but a bit less dynamic and not as expansive in the soundstage.
Hi. Opus;
Not sure if you saw this review from a fellow inmate back in 5/30/14. My pre went south and I thought for $50.00, what the hell. I bought mine on 6/15/14 and am still enjoying it. Hope this little Schiit pans out for you also.
Take care....old guy
even if you don't keep it in your system.
Some years ago a friend built maybe four inexpensive passive boxes ($20 per?) using mainly RS parts. He chose different value volume pots for each to experiment for which worked best in his system. I don't remember the value of the one he kept (possibly 75 or 100K) but he gave me the 50K pot unit. To say the least, that was ear opening.
I was very surprised when I put it into my system for the clarity and openness it provided. It was not a long term success since it gave up too much impact and drive, but it was very instructive in identifying how un-transparent the active preamp I'd been auditioning was.
That prompted me to pick up a Creek as mentioned by Opus and Abe. I've kept that as a back up and, if needed, benchmark for future auditions.

Regarding connections:
1 Connect one source to SYS 1 RCA jacks, using high-quality RCA cables. You can use crap RCA cables too, as long as they work.
2 If you have a second source, connect it to SYS 2 RCA jacks, again with RCA cables.
3 Connect SYS OUT RCA jacks to your powered monitors or power amplifier, with even more RCA cables. Yes, you'll need lots of RCAs.
Refreshing.

I had one of these oldies years ago and it wasn't bad. Enjoy your new piece of schiit.
I built one using Radio Shack parts for about $15. Yeah, those are ARC knobs I had left over from a panel change. Any will do since those ran $18 each. :)
I later built another using DACT stepped attenuators and put them in a nice Par-Metals aluminum box.
Too bad they didn't allow enough space to upgrade the schiity quality volume control.
Ironically I found those small pots to sound just as good, if not better than the more expensive ALPS.If you find that you like the passives and want to keep it on the "cheap", look into Goldpoint Audio. Stepped attenuators - great for passives. Actually any volume control in general.

Hope it's a nice piece!
Read up on it a bit before I ordered. Apparently very decent. And specifically the reviewer mentioned the volume control tracked very well.
We shall see and hear, soon.
