It might be an attempt at offering only a 'little more' while improving margins. Some manufacturers have their "SE" or "Signature" models that cost us a lot more and I bet the margins to the manufacturer are much better than the base models. And in many cases the "SE" models sell better. What audiophile wants to be caught with an undesirable non "SE" version? Try reselling that on Audiogon. No one wants em.
Some manufacturers try going upmarket where the margins are better. I have to laugh when I see outrageously priced Musical Fidelity gear. My perception has always been that Musical Fidelity is 'mid-fi' but some of their attempts to go high-end upmarket are laughable. Just me? I don't know.

Yes I see MF as upper mif fi. I've said here that as a dealer accommodation I got the Trivista SACD which was $6495 and wholesale to dealers at $4000 for $2683.
NAD had a 40 point margin as a dealer. Like I said I'm not angry I just noticed it. Take DVD players. In the same 10 years we now have hi def Blu Ray and wi-fi w/apps for about 20 cents on the dollar of what was around then. Today $100 gets you Blu Ray, Wi-Fi but with some cost cutting things like no more display on the unit, just on screen.

I don't recall which MF integrated had the HUGE volume knob and outboard power supply. This was at least a decade or more ago. A dealer that I liked took one in on trade and he showed me how messed up the motorized volume pot was because of the overweight aluminum mega knob.
The only NAD piece I had was a small receiver from around 1995 that cost me $399. I thought I was buying a cut above consumer grade for better sound in my office down the street. I was very disappointed with that NAD receiver. I replaced it with a department store Onkyo for half the price (literally just $199) and it outperformed the NAD in every respect.
I haven't tried any other NAD since but I suspect some of their gear is good based on the comments I've read about NAD integrated amps.
That was the Trivista amp and the one we had did have issues with the mega knob that weighed a ton. (good name Abe) It came loose and was a pain in the ass to reattach properly. Good intentions-poor execution. I do have a Musical Fidelity pen with a built in level that still works well.....
