The highest power I see is 40 WPC, which just isn't enough to get my speakers up and about...
Damn! Another tastey, modular construction.

Then neither would be 70 WPC. It's not even 3dB, barely noticible.
Have you actually MEASURED what sort of voltages that you are applying to your speakers when playing at your prefered level? You may be surprised.
For starters try to find someone that has a storage scope, which are much more common nowadays and affordable thanks to digital technology, and ask them to measure the peaks when you are listening at a satisfactory level. Since most amplifiers are essentially voltage sources nowadays that will give you a very good reference point.
When you hear differences between amplifiers it's rarely due to the actual power capabilities, rather it's other attributes such as output impedance over frequency, interactions with reactive loads and internal distortion mechanisms that come through.
But then again, I'm not a head-banger.

While I agree with your latter points...

I find 3 db very noticeable and 1 db noticeable when fine tuning balance.
The most resolute of objectivists blow a gasket if you compare two amplifiers and don't match level within 0.1 db. :)
here is a copy of the impedance/phase plot of my speakers...

That pole at 500 Hz is awesome. You probably need a rather good "voltage source" if you want to damp that critter.

Long answer: Well, since you and I both know what we're on about, we don't really need to go there, do we? LOL

Yep! That's one reason why a 20 watt tube amp seems like it can cook a 100 watt solid state amp. For the reasons you just mentioned!

3db is nothing , Especially if you love clipping ....... :)
