Hey Pepper
First, congrats on the 3.7i's...the Magtech is a GREAT match for that speaker. I am guessing that with your 1.7's, they really sang...expect more of that, BUT that true ribbon tweeter with the Magtech is truly special...I am amazed on daily basis...
I have stated this quite a few times on the Planar Asylum...I never really new what the term "effortless sound" meant, until the Magtech showed up...it just pumps extremely neutral sound...
I was able to compare, side by side, my CJ CT-5 with the 6N30P tubes to the CJ 16LS II, which has the 6922 tubes...these two preamps are cut from the same cloth, but have some very distinct differences that have to do more with personal preferences...
The CT-5 with the 6N30P is not your Father's CJ...this is a very fast, with brutally revealing detail...it actually sounds more solid state then tube...the top is extended and really clean...the bottom is forceful in the upper bass, does not seem to round itself off the lower it goes...it has all the attributes of a great solid state pre, with just the tiniest hint of midrange sweetness...and I mean tiny...
The CJ 16LS II with the 6922 is more of the traditional CJ "romantic" sound...with much more midrange sweetness, smooooooth highs and round bottom...does a better job with bad recordings...with more emphasis on tone and texture...then detail...things are just not as flushed out as they are with the CT-5...
After 2 days of listening with my friend, (that owned the 16LS II), we BOTH felt we could live with either of these two stellar pre-amps...he preferred his and I preferred mine...I am 10 years younger than him and bit more of a rocker, so the CT-5 matched my tastes...where the 16 LS II was more suited for his preferences...IMHO, that is part of what makes this hobby so much fun...looking for that synergy between components and tailoring your rig to achieve personal preferences of musical presentation...
Now...those 3.7i's NEED a good 200+ hours to really settle in...right out of the box, that ribbon tweeter is going to be in your face and may be a little harsh...fear not, that changes with break-in...I am not a fan of the using the Maggie resistors so I just let them play 24/7 until they smoothed out...the bass I get from the 3.7i's something I would have never anticipated being forceful from a planar...it does not hit you in the chest...but sound damn good...
I had a pair Monitor Audio FB-210 subs, that matched beautifully with my 1.6's...they did NOT mate up with the 3.7i's on about 20% of the music I played...so I got rid of them...I really do not miss them...a little for movies, but not for music...
I do recommend the Mye Audio Stands and lose the steel jumpers...I am going to do the fuse by-pass in the near future and might do the Al Sekala Choke tweak...(there is a thread running on this tweak on the planar asylum board right now)...
Thanks
Mark

Beautiful job Mark Man....
Thanks Utley...
Birds of feather...
One of my great Pet-Peeves, are people that talk in absolutes...there is just way to much gray in our hobby based on personal preferences...
OR
because I OWN IT, it is the best...
how can someone say that sucks, but has never heard it??!!??
Taking it even further...attacking the windmills on a HOBBY forum??? Really???
Hey, that's why they make Fords and Chevy's...
Pepper Art, Jeff, has my opinion on what I heard in a side by side...from what he described, I thought me CT-5 would not be for him, but thought he might be interested in something warmer...hence the 16LS II...
Thanks again...you have always been a good dude...
Mark
You gave Pepper Jack some great advice. And he has good instincts himself . Did hear the 3.7i as I had once mentioned, did like it more than the original. Unfortunately, those of doomed to apt living with noisy neighbors above only get a few windows of opportunity(pieced in to the day) to listen seriously, and peacefully so I am in stasis with with 1.7's. Think your choices are a brilliant mix.
Forgot to say Mark, that is a beautiful preamp you have!
Great info Mark, appreciate it. I would probably prefer the CJ 16LS II based on my tastes, and since I might be looking for more than a "taste" of mid-range sweetness.
I assume you keep your Magtech amp on all the time as recommended. That's what I do. I actually tried two different tube preamps with it and every time I would turn them on, there was either a loud thump (DeHaviland Ultraverve) or a much worse loud "crackle" (Dodd Audio variable gain battery powered pre). This wouldn't have happened if the normal procedure of pre on 1st, amp on 2nd were followed. The DeHaviland did not have a mute switch. On the Dodd there was a 3 position rotary switch: Off - Mute - On.
The 3.7i speakers I'm getting are at the factory being upgraded. The original owner I bought them from had them from around mid 2012 so they should be broken in. He drove them to the factory, then Magnepan will ship to me using one of their trusted freight carriers. Seemed like a safe way to buy a used pair. Really looking forward to the ribbon tweeter.
I used a pair of Vandersteen 2Wq subs with the 1.7s and they are the easiest subs to integrate. I hope they are not needed with the 3.7i speakers, can free up some cash.
The 1.7s were also mated with Mye stands, I sold them with the speakers. Would definitely like to get the 3.7 Mye stands.
I'd like to find out more about the fuse by-pass (I'll check the planar asylum board), and I was using the Al Sekala Choke tweak, but after reading the current thread on, not sure if it's a good idea. I couldn't hear much difference with it.
Thanks,
Jeff
Thanks Jeff
Mine are an upgrade pair of 3.7's to the i's...worth every penny...it takes a great speaker to the next level...
Sounds like you will not have to go through the break-in stuff, so that is cool...
The Magtech is the enteral flame...never shuts off...except when I leave town or big thunder boomers roll in...in talking to Roger Sanders, he said his "shop" got a direct lighting strike and it fried his computers and allot of his testing equipment but never touched his amps and preamps...I was going to buy a BrickWall surge protector, but he told me not to waste my money and plug it directly into the wall...
CJ came out with the ACT, CT-5 and the CT-6 in and around 2007...it was the first time they used the 6N30P's as a platform...many of the hardcore CJ guys did NOT like these offerings for all the above reasons I stated...
There new offerings, the GAT, ET-5 and ET-3SE are all back to the 6922's...I have not heard any of these offerings, but the CJ fan boys are much happier...
All the CJ's have a soft start feature...they preheat the tubes for 53 seconds before you can operate the remote...(it sounds stupid, but those are the longest 53 seconds)...CJ's are susceptible to static electricity issues, when it gets really cold and dry during our MN winters, so I always ground myself before I shut them off...(I have a post on this board asking and talking about that somewhere)...the static issue is something I am willing to live with...
Over on the Planar board there are about 7-10 Magtech owners that post and out of those, about 4-6 using them with 3.7's...Audiophalnder is a guy I recommended the Magtech too...with his 3.7's...(I always get nervous when I recommend something to someone...what if they do not like it??? In our extremely subjective hobby), but needless to say, he sang my praises when he got it...IHMO it is sooooo much better than the Brystons...which is a Maggie go to amp, as you know...Quite a few guys use Pass amps with their Maggies, I personally have not heard that combo...a new amp is not on my radar at all...quite content with the Magtech...
Thanks again...get a hold of my anytime offline if you like...
take care
Mark
