I know your amp fairly well (former service for AA). The amps you are looking at are more of a sideways move than a step up. The best being the Creek or Rega. You would need to up the budget to make a substantial improvement buying new.
Some of your complaints about your amp can be attributed to your speakers.
Limited bass, laid back and difficulty at high volume are all characteristics of your speakers.
You might be better off getting the amp fixed and replacing the speakers.

audio analogue Puccini SE (the pre-remote one) ...
Dan, Pomole,
Wondering about Pomole's current version.
http://www.audioanalogue.com/faq.php#34 (see #10)
"10. There are three different model of the Audio Analogue Puccini SE. The first was produced since the 1996 until the 2001 and you can recognize it because it has a mechaical input selector and it hasn't the remote. The second revision (with 4.3 revision PCB) can be recognized by the serial number, it has a relè baesed input selection with a self-return switch on the knob, this revision also has the remote (Puccini SE Remote) The third revision (with 5.0 revision of the PCB) also can be recognized by the serial number. Such as the second revision the third has a relè baesed input selection with a self-return switch on the knob, it has the remote and has a different preamplifier section based on a BJT stage (while the previous revision have a JFET based input stage). The third revision also has an improved power amplifier output section. Below there are some examples about how to recognize the revision of the unit reading the serial number: N99B1368R3E – First revision (R3E) N01M1285R43S – Second revision with PCB REV .4.3 (R43S) A02C0080R50S - Third revision with PCB REV. 5.0 (R50S)"
I had what I think is the 'latest' Puccini SE, bought in March 2002 but not delivered until June or July ...
My serial number was B02E0144R5S (NOT R50S ...). I lost the pics I took of the circuit board itself.
I'm wondering if 'my' version would give Pomole more of the goodness he's looking for (maybe also with a new set of speakers)? I am guessing, but from descriptions of the 'original' Puccini (by Sam Tellig, who influenced me to seek the Puccini out) the original version(s) were more tube-like, whereas mine didn't strike me as that, but gave a wonderful detailed but smooth sound.
I sold mine to another audiophile who frequents other forums, if that's of interest I could pass along his contact info (or ask him myself if he's interested in selling). He may have sold already, seems like he's using another pre/amp as his main system now.
thanks for the suggestion. I am glad to hear from someone who knows the amp well. I agree that it is a fine piece of kit.
I thought about speaker upgrades as well- the Rega r1's are remarkable speakers but completely shut off below 60hz.
Can you recommend any reasonably priced bookshelf speakers that make a good combo and satisfy the need to rock out with the puccini?

I hope someone else can chime in on speakers. I haven't looked seriously at speakers in years.
I have heard good things about Usher though
