Static should not affect the equipment in that manner. I live right here in Minnesota too and get none of that.
The techniques for preventing this problem have been known for decades.

I thought that was obvious, since I said I bought an Aesthetix Calypso to replace it.
Besides, it wasn't that simple. I didn't include the rest of the story, just the basics.
Before I started having the muting problem, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This was around 2004. I'm cured now (knock wood). As the final step in the treatment, I had brachytherapy (implantation of radioactive seeds in the prostate). This followed 6 weeks of radiation therapy.
Okay, did that make ME radioactive and did this contribute to the muting problem? Sounds ridiculous, right? But only I could mute the CJ preamp by touching it. My friends couldn't duplicate this EXCEPT ONCE OR TWICE. And when I took it to an audiobuddy's house, I could mute it there too. My buddy couldn't.
Does that tend to absolve the CJ preamp? All I know is that the successor preamp from Aesthetix has always been totally immune to anything I did, insofar as muting was concerned. I had almost forgotten the whole dreary saga until this thread -- with the new info that others had suffered something like I did -- appeared today.
No idea!
I hope you are feeling better!!
