Attenuated is the only way to go.
Sounds a lot better than the traditional carbon comp pots. And I've tried them all.

Yeah, read some good reviews on this. If I go this way, it's a contender.
I've been DIYing passive for the last several months. And it seems they are all pretty much the same when it comes to a volume pot type setup. The major difference with the Placette is it's a stepped attenuator - WITH A REMOTE. Discrete resistors at every volume level. Clarity in spades! Excellent TOTL metal film resistors and I think a 128 step volume control. You don't see that everyday!

I've had mine many years and I'd add that it is one of the few passives where input select is also on the remote. I too believe a resistor ladder is the way to go when you have extremely passive friendly synergy with your gear and don't need the little bit of gain in a TVC.
