I finally got around to trying the CIAudio PLC 1 MK II and loved it so much, I converted both my HT and tube system. All my sources put out plenty of gain and active pres just add too much more. I can't see how you could ever be short on gain to drive your amp, how often do you ever need full power anyway.
The CIAudio is great, it even has HT bypass and remote. In the HT system I added a Yaqin tube buffer after the passive to add a little tube warmth.
Sounds really nice, its like a passive with a tube output stage.
In the tube system I have one driving a pair of 300B monos with long cables, with no problem. Both systems are now so much more fatigue free.

That sounds like a preamp to me

Yeah, but with no added gain, just a little tube flavor.
