I put a Mazda Cifte 12au7 in the center pre amp position with great results. The other 2 12au7 are La Radio Techniques from 1958 or 62.
I rolled a couple of NOS Mullard 4004's in the 12ax7 spots and they made a huge difference over the stock Tung Sol's. A lot richer and fuller and a graininess in vocals went away. I've switched them back and forth a few times to verify what I was hearing.
One unusual thing tho, after a couple of days with the Mullards the sound thins out and loses a lot of bass. If I take them out and re seat them it sounds great again. Could this be caused by oxidation on the pins?

Interesting. I don't know about the bass thinning out over time.
I may try a Mullard CV4003 in the center 12AU7 position but in some other gear I've owned, I preferred Amperex. To my ears the Mullard was very smooth but the Amperex was a bit more transparent. Of course that was in a tube CD player, not a preamp so I don't know if I'll hear similar results in the Rogue.
With my speakers (Odyssey Kismet Reference Floorstanding speakers), the Mullard added just the perfect amount of midrange richness without taking the transparency away. It also took away that little bit of grit the stock JJ tube gave. I now listen (not critically) to this amp for 6-8 hours at a time with no fatigue.
"Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells."
Digging through my box of tubes that I've bought over the years I came across some "Platinum Grade" (per Upscale Audio) including a Mullard CV4003:
That's some tube box you got there, Abe. Very nice find.
