I've been looking for an Amp/Dac for TV System, this has the features I want, I hope it's a good unit.
Some reviews at What Hi-Fi of more expensive Yamaha models were kind of luke-warm.
Supposed to be out this month.
Anyone heard anything about it?
I didn't find any early reviews.
$ 899.00 retail.

IMO the reviewers are rarely bonafide audiophiles but young journalists (20 somethings)recruited by the publishers, Haymarket, and assigned to this magazine for a kind of apprenticeship. Come back to the magazine in, say, five years, and you will not find many if any of them still writing for it. They will have moved on to the car publications that they were aiming for.
Hi Fi News (sticking with the UK magazines) at least does engage real audio hobbyists and many stick around reviewing for decades. They review the Yamaha upper range A-S2100 in the latest edition. Highly recommended was the result. However the review is by Andrew Everard who was the editor of What Hi-Fi and audio editor of Gramophone!I'll be a bit sceptical then.
In the end you have to hear what you are interested in buying for yourself, of course. I can't think of a way round that.
and also the more expensive models, too bland was the verdict.
They typically prefer components that are on the bright side of neutral.
Reviews of several Yamaha integrated amplifiers are available at Australian Hi-Fi magazine (see link below). They are big fans of Yamaha's amps.

You might be right if the Sony TA-A1ES is 'brighter' than the Yamaha amps. I have the Sony and it sounds quite nice to me but I wouldn't mind trying something like the Yamaha A-S2000 or the A-S2100 someday, but the 2100 is on the pricey side.
The Yamaha A-S801 seems like it would be an ideal amp for a 2-channel TV A/V setup with it's built in DAC, if it sounds good.
do you think of the Sony review now that you've had it for some while?
I still like the Sony TA-A1ES a lot. I'm not sure what the reviewer means by
...there is a shortfall of rhythmic drive; the TA-A1ES doesn’t convey the momentum or changes in pace of music as well as it might.
Verdict
We’d like a bit more punch too – it all seems just a touch polite at the moment. None of these shortcomings is fatal.
I don't hear these shortfalls as described above but my office listening room is fairly small at 12'x10'. It's a nice sounding amp but not quite up there with my tube amps.
