In Reply to: RE: ARC VT-100 Mk I, Mk II, Mk III Comparison (again) posted by George S. Roland on October 28, 2014 at 10:02:29
having owned the original and later having the factory upgrade it to the MKII version.
The difference was largely in terms of bass impact and dynamics. You see a daughter power supply board was added that doubled the power supply energy. They also introduced a small fan.
I suspect the MKIII would sound different using a JFET/6H30 front end. While that is their current practice today (like my SP20 preamp), the earlier versions tended to be on the overly detailed side, IMHO.

Thank you for your followup!
Didn't the Mk II version have a substantially larger transformer (the single one behind the faceplate?
Regarding the bass, do you think the onset of bass notes was a bit firmer, crisper in the Mk II than the Mk I?
Many thanks!
George
Don't think the power transformer changed, but it has been more than a decade ago. Looking at pics on ARCDB , it doesn't seem to be the case.
Yes, bass was tighter and crisper on my Acoustats.
I owned the VT100mkII and thought the bass was full bodied and dynamic. It mated very well with my Thiel CS1.5 and Tannoy Definition D500 speakers. I believe the power supply in the mkII had more filter caps.
BTW, the main photo of the ARC VT100 on the ARCDB is of my VT100mkII from many years ago. I took that photo in my living room.
You take such nice pics, Abe. :)
