Dude, you and I started around the same time! In September '86, I got the Sony STR-AV780 AV recevier, my first stereo gear.
As for Yamaha, my son is learning piano on a Yamaha keyboard.
As for Yamaha hi-fi, my first (and, to date, only) stereo product was the NS-W2 subwoofer. Since my system was bass-shy, I needed that subwoofer to bring out Nikki Sixx's basslines on Motley Crue's Girls Girls Girls.

Nice pic!
I had a similar entertainment rack for my stereo + tv back in the 80's.
Who knew?
My long-time readers know that my parents' 15'x15' room was the worst for audio. It was fully furnished, but the most negative impact was the stone wall behind the speakers. That stone wall reflected bass into the room. In this chamber of horrors, even the tiny NHT SuperZero boomed with excess bass.
! I was referring to the chair!
Stone/Concrete is definitely not Sound-Friendly.
The tiny kitchen was attached to a corner of the 15'x15' living room. There was no dining room, so we had to put a kitchen table into the living room, further squeezing out any room for hi-fi.
I learned the hard way, that only minimonitors and small floorstanders have any chance of succeeding in this acoustical chamber of horrors.
I made the grave mistake of getting Thiels, which need space to breathe, and require you to listen from a distance. Obviously, in a small room, that isn't mathematically possible.
As the population rises, and people cram into smaller and smaller quarters, my writings about dinky rooms has become more germane. Bu that wasn't the case 20 years ago, when high-end audio exponentially grew, and reviewers lived in (or had access to) large homes.
