Curl is one of an elite group which includes the likes of Pass and D'Agostino.
I'm sure a few others should be on this list, but it certainly won't number more than 8 or 10 individuals in the 'modern' era.
The key is LOTS of hours doing this AND constantly learning from the good AND the bad results.
I have a friend with the JC-1s and they are MONSTERS. The crook that wants these better not only bring a couple buddies and a Fork Lift, but a proper truck.

Follow Ups:
D'Agostino! Please..May have been decent but now just a hack with those Momentum bombers.
I SAW a pair of Pass Labs latest BIG 2-chassis mono blocs. The room, a hotel up in Newport Beach, was hot as a SAUNA and the amps were responsible. My house AC could NOT survive that onslaught, especially this last week which peaked over 95f. Atypical for SoCal coastal. And HUMID.
The Momentum test I just read was pretty favorable. And to tie it back to Pass, were also pretty warm running, not being able to pass the 1hour @1/3 power 'preconditioning' period which stereophile uses.
Besides the cost, what's NOT to like?
Who else is on the elite amp designer list?
Too much is never enough
John Curl and Nelson Pass always try to improve their new designs. D'Agostino's new designs are high priced and mediocre performers. The first set of Momentum's Stereophile tested failed, they never tried the same test with a replacement second set to meet publishing deadlines. Later Krell gear, especially the Showcase home theater stuff, was laughable.
All of these guys are great. They love what they do and it shows.
The Stereophile test I read had ONE of the pair of mono blocs fail during the pre-conditioning period. It would not restart even though the fuses were good. OOOPS!
The other met or exceeded most specs except for bandwidth. Square wave was near-perfect.
Other measured performance was pretty darn good, including 2ohm power of OVER 1kw. I'd personally have a separate 20 amp circuit for EACH amp.
Not for me, though. I'm quite happy with the Parasound I have hooked to my panels. If I had THAT kind of $$$ for amps? I'd go with either a pair of JC-1 or look to Pass for some 'a' monos.
Too much is never enough
