I am pairing some KEF 104/2's with an Aragon 8008BB.
I'd like to add a nice tube preamp.
Have a budget of about $1k used, and have considered:
Eastern Electric Avant (nice plus, it's balanced - like the Aragon)
Basic BAT Pre (as above)
Conrad Johnson PV10
Looking for something with nice low level detail, more smooth/sweet than absolutely accurate, and would welcome any thoughts or suggestions.
Thank you !

Look for something with a low output impedance. Helps drive the Aragons which, unbalanced have only a 22k input impedance. If you look at the old Aragon SS preamps, they also had low out impedances.
I use a Dodds diy tube preamp/buffer with an Aragon 8008ST, driving KEF LS50s. Using a 6H30DR tube in the Dodds unit, the output impedance is around 100 ohms.
2nd the CJ pv10 - which I've owned & used w/McCormack DNA-1 Deluxe for decades - or pv11. Both work well w/ss amps, but be aware that they have high gain.
From what I've read the EE Minimax would provide more of what you're looking for than the Avant, and the Tutay mods for the Minimax lower the gain.
There's an ARC SP-6B at Audiogon for $950. No relation with or knowledge of seller.
I've heard Audible Illusions pre-amps successfully combined with solid state amps on several occasions....even owned a 2B/Superphon amp combination. Back in the day, the A.I. power amp was solid state.
I owned the CJ PV11 for several years, and loved it when partnered with my Muse 160 amp and Acoustat Spectra 1100 electrostats. Not sure of the sonic differences between the PV10 and PV11.
ARC SP9 MKIII.
