Thinking of selling my $8K Tom Evans tube amp, don't know where to go from there. Budget $3500 or less, used OK, speakers efficient, listen to classical music
Follow Ups:
If you want to stay in the same sonic family, you might want to check out a First Watt J2. I've had Tom Evans gear in the past, their preamp and phono stage, and I'm very fond of the J2.
If your speakers are efficient and have a flat highish impedance then I'd try and have a listen to an Atmasphere OTL, once heard it will be hard to listen to others IMO.
You're going to get a lot of responses asking specifically what you didn't like about the Tom Evans, and what kind of sound you're looking for in the replacement.
So the Tom Evans has opamps driving a quad per side of EL84, running in parallel single ended...that is indeed a weird beast (and that's putting it mildly). So perhaps you're looking for something more traditional? Personally I'd look at options from Rogue, Manley, and some older VAC gear (e.g. the Marantz 8B clone, or the Renaissance amps, NOT the Auricle Musicblocs which suck), all used (on a $3500 budget). Or if you're more adventurous, a nicely restored vintage tube amp like an original Marantz 8B or a McIntosh.
