In Reply to: RE: VTL st 150 with Shahinian Obelisk - any thoughts? posted by BenE on August 06, 2014 at 08:29:15
I have had obelisk with Macintosh, Naim, blue circle, and Jadis
The first room was 27 x 35', and only the Macintosh was able to do it justice. It sounded incredible
The room where they are right now, it's 14 x 20 ,much lower ceiling, kind of bright.
JAdis sounds sublime with strings and low level vocals, however it's 30 w seems to be way less if there is any material with bass and midbass. It is as if that soundstage collapses, and the voices become one-dimensional. My magnepans actually seem to sound louder !!
I think it is because they are difficult to drive
The blue circle is actually very good, but it suffers from the similar fate although at higher levels.
The Naim, only has 50 W per channel however it holds up very synergistically all the way up till the end at high levels.
An old McIntosh 350 ? Tube amp did very well and played without the Jadis problems at high levels. ( I think it had 70 w per channel) but I did not get to use it for long.
They are a difficult load to drive.
Follow Ups:
No more than 12.5 x 18 with 8.5 foot ceilings. What do you think?
Honestly I think it should be fine!!
Although they are difficult to drive I think the vtl will have plenty of power...unless you are a metal head ! :)
Btw...I never felt the vtl were slow.
Thanks for your replies. I don't think vtl is regarded as slow either. Never heard that before. I plan on listening to vtl, ayre ax 5 and line magnetic 501ia tomorrow.
Just personal opinion of the VTL -and MacIntosh as well --- YVMV--and fine by me-- noted your
auditioning to be had --I rate the Ayre in that lot--but maybe too dry for your taste.
Good listening
