Wondering if the VTL would have the current to drive the Obelisk2 and also opinions of the amp period.
Thank you,

Could you clarify this a bit and let me know what you feel is better.
Thanks
Heavens--there are many better choices than ponderous VTLs--they give me the impression the
music is waiting for the them to catch up--ugh!
This would be my choice--or the latest versions from VAC

I have had obelisk with Macintosh, Naim, blue circle, and Jadis
The first room was 27 x 35', and only the Macintosh was able to do it justice. It sounded incredible
The room where they are right now, it's 14 x 20 ,much lower ceiling, kind of bright.
JAdis sounds sublime with strings and low level vocals, however it's 30 w seems to be way less if there is any material with bass and midbass. It is as if that soundstage collapses, and the voices become one-dimensional. My magnepans actually seem to sound louder !!
I think it is because they are difficult to drive
The blue circle is actually very good, but it suffers from the similar fate although at higher levels.
The Naim, only has 50 W per channel however it holds up very synergistically all the way up till the end at high levels.
An old McIntosh 350 ? Tube amp did very well and played without the Jadis problems at high levels. ( I think it had 70 w per channel) but I did not get to use it for long.
They are a difficult load to drive.
No more than 12.5 x 18 with 8.5 foot ceilings. What do you think?
Honestly I think it should be fine!!
Although they are difficult to drive I think the vtl will have plenty of power...unless you are a metal head ! :)
Btw...I never felt the vtl were slow.
Thanks for your replies. I don't think vtl is regarded as slow either. Never heard that before. I plan on listening to vtl, ayre ax 5 and line magnetic 501ia tomorrow.
Just personal opinion of the VTL -and MacIntosh as well --- YVMV--and fine by me-- noted your
auditioning to be had --I rate the Ayre in that lot--but maybe too dry for your taste.
Good listening

I use VTL MB-450s with Sound Lab U-1s. They are essentially mono versions of the ST-150 with double the output. The U-1s, like most full range electrostats, offer a challenging reactive load that takes a nose dive in impedance at the top. I've been using them with this and another electrostat for over ten years. VTL uses good iron in their trannies. I find they match well.
From what I find on the Shahinian site, the Obelisk is nominally rated at 6 ohms and uses conventional dynamic drivers. You might check with Shahinian.
Thanks for the response. The Obelisk uses several drivers, has a passive radiator and dips to 2ohms or below at times. They like a good deal of current. I'm hoping the VTL can swing it.
Thanks again
