In Reply to: RE: REVIEW: Krell KAV-280p Preamplifier (SS) posted by readargos on August 03, 2014 at 16:09:50
I'm preparing a review of the new Krell Foundation preamp/processor, and found your descriptions of the older 280p interesting. For what it's worth, both inmates Abe and Luminator have posted somewhat similar descriptions of the sound of the 280p back in 2007.
Based on your descriptions, it seems that the Foundation shares what you describe as the strengths of the 280p, but without sacrificing airiness and warmth. It's a lovely piece of gear as an analog preamp, and then on top of that it's a beautiful sounding digital processor. And it's packaged in the same box as their more expensive stand-alone preamps, which is a nice touch.
My only prior ownership experience with Krell had been their KAV 300i integrated, which I found similar to what Abe describes in the 2250 amp. Mind you I've not heard the 2250, so am just comparing the 300i to Abe's description.
The Foundation won me over quickly.

"If you are the owner of a new stereophonic system, this record will play with even more brilliant true-to-life fidelity. In short, you can purchase this record with no fear of its becoming obsolete in the future."
Follow Ups:
I think that's true - the better Krell gear mitigates what might be viewed as the shortcomings of the older KAV line; but even in Krell's Class A gear of this era, it seemed you had to get up to the FPB 600 through the 700cx to transcend the shortcomings entirely.
I haven't heard the EVO or the new iBias Krell. I have had extensive experience with the S300i, however, which I found to be less dark-sounding than previous Krell gear.
I had the 300iL, which I liked a lot, but it also required ample warmup. If I were planning to listen in the evening, I would power it up before leaving for work in the morning.
I look forward to your review JoshT.
