In Reply to: RE: Sony TA-A1ES vs Yamaha A-S2000 Integrated Amps ? posted by AbeCollins on July 15, 2014 at 21:05:18
Coincidently the same system had the huge Rogue Apollo mono blocs and the Herra II preamp. I put that Sony integrated in place of those keeping the Sony HAPZi-ES as the source, speakers were the Sony SS NA2ES (($10k a pair).
Why does Sony insist on using those awkward product designators anyway?
Point being the little Sony integrated was pretty nice. Of course it didn't have anywhere near the impact of the Rogue system but I still enjoyed what I was listening to. I haven't heard the Yamaha and I wouldn't call the Sony a bargain at $2k, but I found nothing objectionable about it either. I wouldn't rate is a highly as I do the matching server, but sound-wise that HAp Z1-ES is in a rare league IMO.

Thanks for your comments on how the Sony sounds relative to the much larger Rogue gear. You're right about Sony's product naming with really weird and hard to remember model numbers!
I just bought a Sony TA-A1ES integrated this evening for much less than the $2K MSRP and it should be here next week. I thought the Sony HAP-S1 'hi-res' player, which is the little brother to your Sony HAP-Z1ES, sounded very good with it's built-in 30wpc integrated amp. I figured I would give Sony's flagship TA-A1ES integrated a shot.
I don't expect it to sound as good as my Rogue but I want something I can leave ON all day and not be concerned with vacuum tube wear. I like listening to background music while I work at my desk and feel that's a terrible waste of costly vacuum tubes.
P.S. If the Sony doesn't work out, I'll be looking at the Yamaha A-S2000 or A-S1000. Thanks again.
I use a 15 year old Kenwood 104 AR receiver that the previous owners left with the house. It drives in-ceiling speakers in several rooms and has been on pretty much 24/7 for eight years. I'm usually streaming the local classical station or XM during the day.
Back in April, the speakers in the office were crackling, so I splurged the princely sum of $25 for a pair of GRC eight inchers from Parts Express. I discovered the surrounds on the original pair were shot. :)
The 104AR is a real workhorse, pretty decent sonics too, I use a 103AR in my garage while rotating various speakers in and out.
At least with your in-ceiling speakers, you have more room!
If you don't care for it I'm sure you'll have no trouble unloading it. (ahem...)
The artificial sounding TA-1AES was returned to Sony carriage free. Great that they have a 30 Day trial & collect same plus an immediate full refund, HATS off to Sony.
Good one!
