You are better off with the volume higher up on the range of the dial. Gear always sounds better with less attenuation. As far as running the preamp tubes hotter, you really should not worry about that, preamp tubes last for years.

Thanks for the reply, I just had a conversation with a very nice dealer, and he too echoed what you said. He said not to worry about the whole gain "issue" and arc knows what they are doing, lol. He said the ls17 has more than enough power to drive the input stage of the hd220 and squeeze out all the performance. According to the ls27 and ref 3 manuals, they are also 2v, so I'm worrying over nothing. I had visions of having to upgrade my preamp in order to get all the power out of the amp. Again- we don't listen to specifications. Lol. Now I'm interested in a power cord, bu realize the pangea does not come in 20 amp. Not to keen on using an adaptor either.
That's good to hear. Now you could stop worrying and enjoy your new amp!
