Buy one and let me know how it turns out.

Hi and thanks for the reply
I am always looking for an altenative to "discrete" attenuators
The good mechanics are very expensive
I have decided to give cermet pots a try, for a diy project
Bourns 10K linear to be modified
Unfortunately they are single ... but i will try anyway
I opened an alps blue velvet once
The resistive layer is deposited on a plastic film that can warp
Instead, if i am not wrong, in the cermet pot the resistive trace is on a ceramic substrate ? this could give a much better contact with the wiper
But i have to try as soon as i will receive the pieces
Regarding the value looking at the passive around, Placette included, 10K is quite common
I would try even lower ... 5K
If the dac has a tube output it will not work
But i have decided not to go the tube way ... so
Thanks again
Kind regards,
bg
For volume control a log taper pot would be much better than a linear taper one because our hearing is roughly logarithmic in its response.
Consequently and possibly confusingly a log taper will appear more linear in its control to us while a linear taper will appear to have all the control in its first quarter with not much audible change in the remaining 3/4 of travel.
Hi and i agree about the linear taper not suitable for volume control
But a small resistance can vary the attenuation curve
I think that a very important factor is the quality of contact between the resistive layer and the wiper
The superiority of discrete attenuator i think it is due to this ... a better contact meand less noise that is then amplified downstream
I think that cermet pots are better than conductive plastic pots in this regard ... less noisy
But i have to try and listen
Kind regards,
bg
The best faders/pots I have used are Penny&Giles which are used in most high-quality mixing consoles. They are conductive plastic jobs but also very expensive, too expensive for most HiFi applications.
Hi and i know the brand, very famous
Clearly not all the plastics are equal ... I am just curious about cermet pot
Maybe i will be disappointed
In general i like pot more than attenuator
I prefer a smooth action ...
Looking at the P&G it is more value than my preamp ... very beautiful
It is a pity to put it inside the box ... what a nice part.
Kind regards,
bg
