I owned a C-70 way back when. I liked it so much I upgraded to the Yamaha C-2x, which was an outstanding preamp with a very good phono stage. I played it for nearly 10-years until I upgraded to a Mark Levinson No.28. Now I have Pass Labs electronics.

I had a Yamaha C-80 in my system for quite a while and liked it quite a bit. However, when I picked up a Yamaha C-2x for cheap, it was clearly superior, and I sold the C-80. I liked the C-2x so much that I am still using it and my search for a preamp has ended. It does everything I want extremely well. There are no tone controls on that Mark Levinson!

Nor, on my Pass Labs!
I do miss tone controls occasionally, but not too often. I certainly wouldn't trade one single component in my present system for anything I owned in the past.

I have a lot of Columbia classical records. They have great performances, but you really suffer the sound without tone controls. Don't get me started on rock! I don't want the recording quality to always dictate what I listen to. Also, the Yamaha is no slouch on the good stuff. It is the perfect balance for me, but not for everyone!

Yamaha did make some excellent phono stages.
Somewhere I've got a C-6 which I got off ebay for the princely sum of £30 and besides its parametric tone controls the phono section is its best feature.
