I am trying to sell an Audible Illusions Modulus 2D for a friend. It sounds great but in these early models the transformer is packed tightly under the lid. In this one the anodized finish is faded around the area above the transformer and one person looking at it is concerned that the transformer is going to fail. I think the heat over 30 years has faded the finish and there's nothing to worry about. Does anyone have any input that could help?

Nothing to be concerned with.
It's just age and some heat.
OTOH, the heater diodes, which AI mounts at board level generate a lot of heat. This always shows as a burnt up area of the PCB.
Replace and leave the full lead (horse shoe loop) of the diode package intact.
Cheers,
W
The discoloration of the anodization is typical for the reasons stated, and age.
The issue with the diodes is valid - though I have not seen that happen a lot...
They are older units - the 2D - but still quite serviceable and sound great in the right system.
Happy listening
is if you look at the 4 power supply diodes that are on the board, the board is almost always discolored from the heat, and sometimes cracked. Discolored is fine, cracked is not. The anodizing does not pose an issue at all.
I've seen many components with faded anodizing, and none suffered from failure. The issue is more poor processing for the anodized finish. After an acid soak the part is dipped in a water soluble dye and boiled (literally) in order to fix the dye into the enlarged metal pores. If the boiling is insufficient, the dye will eventually leach out and fade.
