What is the verdict on this pre? Some reviews are great while others are not very good at all. Anyone hear one of these?
Follow Ups:
I had one for a couple days and returned it. I bought it used from a local seller and when I got it home, I discovered that the remote was doing a bunch of screwy things with the preamp.... things other than what I wanted it to do. It was just glitchy and erratic.
For the short while I had the preamp actually working, it didn't sound all that great to my ears. Rather unusual for Cary gear as I like most of their stuff.
I worked on an SLP-03 and don't walk away from it,RUN LIKE HELL.That preamp and the Golden tube SEP1 are the two worst pieces of crap I have ever encountered in tube gear..I got it working for the guy and the he asked me to upgrade it after I got it working. I changed out the Wimas for k40s and some Solen film and tin foil.It made a marginal difference and I told him that not to mention it has a lousy circuit board that warps and arcs connections after it ages.Trust me,you don't want that preanp..The guy sold it and he bought a Fisher 400CX2 that I rebuilt and upgraded for him and now he is as happy as can be.
Honest amplification is better than excessive 2nd order distortion anytime.
I owned one, but was underwhelmed. Sam Telig wrote a review quite a while back in Stereophile, and I recall he had pretty much the same experience. To my ears, it sounded veiled, with a flattened sound field, and plodding compared to other preamps I've owned, including the Conrad-Johnson PV-11L, Conrad-Johnson PFR, Electrocompaniet 4.7, Rogue 99, and Bel Canto SEP2.
