I had the Audio Electronics AES DJH preamp. Great basic line stage preamp. No phono stage if that is what your referring too. It has a nice robust and dynamic sound and matched extremely well with my Pass Labs Aleph 30 power amp. There is one one idiosyncrasy that may matter in your system. It outputs 20 db of gain so you may achieve full output of your power amp early on in the volume control rotation if your amp has a sensitive input stage. You may need to add an attenuator or do the simple mod on the inside.

Can someone explain to me why some preamps have 2 tubes and others have more? Sorry, I have no experience with this. Thank you.
It has to do with how much of the preamp is tube, some of the gain stage, all of the gain stage, buffer stage, even whether it has tube rectifiers in the power supply. Some tube preamps are hybrids, using both solid state and tubes in the gain stages, obviously these units would use fewer tubes. All tube gain stages use more tubes, even more if tubes are used as buffers, and more yet if used in the power supply as rectifiers.
My SLP-98P uses two tubes in each line and phono stages, and another two tubes in each stage for buffers, 8 tubes total. No tube rectification though.
"My SLP-98P uses two tubes in each line and phono stages, and another two tubes in each stage for buffers, 8 tubes total. No tube rectification though."
That should read: "My SLP-98P uses two tubes in each line and phono stages for gain, and another two tubes in each stage for buffers, 8 tubes total. No tube rectification though."
I'm no engineer, but it's a matter of the sophistication of the amp design. I go for the sound/ value factor first most and it excels on that front.
