It's very good but I prefer to run a preamp, or in my recent setup, the preamp that is part of my Integrated amp.

Thanks guys. The thing i don't understand is what does a pre amp add? A pre amp can't be more transparent then a DAC alone. So what is it adding to the presentation? And any idea how?
That one would think that less is more, but I've tried running direct from my Wadia and I've tried a passive pre, but always come back to a decent preamp. The quality of the preamplifiers gain has a large impact the general sound of the complete system. You could possibly argue that it adds or "colors" the sound, but every component does, including amp and cdp. I think it comes down to what sounds good to you. With both the passive and using my Wadia, I found the sound somewhat unbalanced and fatiguing, although prob more dynamic. But hey, that's just my ears and system speaking...

In my case, I had the DAC2 in two setups.
Setup 1: Computer > DAC2 > Aesthetix Tube Linestage > Bryston Amps > Thiel Speakers.
In the setup above I tried the DAC2 driving the Amps directly. I also tried it through the Aesthetix Tube Linestage. The DAC2 was very transparent and clean going directly to the Amps. However, the overall sound was a little more dynamic with the linestage. And as expected, the sound was a bit warmer with more lower midrange and midrange body using the linestage. This is not to say there is anything wrong with using just the DAC2. In fact, it is more transparent and clean this way.
Setup 2: Computer > DAC2 > Rogue Integrated Amp > Thiel Speakers
In this setup I am forced to use the preamp section in the Integrated Amp and I can achieve a similarly robust and slightly warm sound.
In my next setup, someday.... I hope to try the DAC2 directly into a hybrid Class D amp from Rogue. The input stages on the Rogue Hydra and Medusa amps use vacuum tubes.
So, there's nothing wrong with using the DAC2's volume control. It works quite nicely. If transparency is what you want, you'll get it!
