This preamp uses 6DJ8/6922 tubes. According to the manual, they don't have to be a matched set. My question is, can I use any pair of 6922's? Are the values of all 6922's identical and thus interchangeable?
Thanks in advance!

Follow Ups:
I suggest going to RAM labs . Roger Modjeski created the RM-5 pre which uses 6DJ8 (6922) for the phono and line stages like the ARC. He tests his tubes for low noise and selects the best of the lot. He also can match each half of the tube.

since one tube is used for both channels of the phono section and one tube is used for both channels of the line stage. If you use different tubes, I would place the quieter one in the phono stage.
They've been cooking overnight, I just sat down to listen and they are clearly superior to the Sovtek's that were in there. I'm wondering if I should put the dampening rings on them that the Sovtek's have.

I used Herbies damping rings for 2-3 years til i read a post that tubes will sound inferior using them.Could tell an improvement not using them so i would say don't waste money!I have an arc ls-2b mk2 that i bought off audiogon bout a month ago and love it.I have 30-40 6922 and picked out a valvo 3 mica pinched waist to replace a 70's era amperex that came with it.Huge difference!!!
I'll second the choice of Valvo. I am using a pair of Valvo PCC88's in my SP9MKIII and have been very pleased with the results. They added a little warmth to what is normally a slightly cool sounding preamp with EH 6922's.
...and since you NEVER sell ANYTHING ...I guess I'll have to look eleswhere.
Besides, I want a black one this time.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.

Actually I considered calling you when I saw you were looking for one again. I'm using the SP16 pretty much exclusively. Call or email me as I have to thin things out.

My recollection is that there are tubes that are the first gain stage and others that are in the circuit either as Cathode Followers or at unity gain for phase issues - so there is some logic in getting good quiet tubes for the Primary stages, and you can let some of the other tubes be less.
Having said this - I am not sure which tubes are where any more...
Happy Listening
when you look at the schematic, you find that the followers are JFETs. There's one tube in the middle of each stage.
Sure, matched is best, but same brand will do, if you don't have the same brand at least try to stick with two brands with the same sonic characteristics.
