There will either be sufficient system Gain or not & this is easily Heard via a Self Trial. Neither unit will Blow Up.
Ah, the trial is the point. I don't have an Integra 9.8 or 9.9 processor to experiment with. I was hoping for generalizations, the output of phono stages are commonly adequate or commonly not adequate to drive an amp without a preamp. As I understand it, in the pass-through mode, the Integra processing is out of the loop; I assume that includes amplification.
Except for phono, all other audio would be via HDMI, thus the question about phono stage.

The output from the phono stage should be at line level, like any other source but phono stages don't normally have a volume control.

I think Creek made one and also EAR. There is probably more. If you were planning on playing LP's Only, then there wouldn't be any need for a preamp.
