Hi, I have an Audio Refinement Pre 5 preamp which I use with a big VAC tube amp. I love the combo -- the Pre 5 is warm and tubey sounding with great bass -- and prefer it to some tubed preamps I've heard. I would like to take the sound up a notch and am considering a Krell KRC preamp, which are supposed to be revealing and dynamic. I read different opinions about which KRC is better and which ones have a more "tubey" sound. Suggestions appreciated.

Wbick one is better depends on your ears and your system. In my system, back in the 90's, I heard the KRC 2,3 and HR versions. The 2 was the easiest to listen to, the others had more resolution but weren't as musical to me. Conrad Johnson is my preamp of choice these days. If you decide to go down that path, the CT-5 is nice. It's teflon caps just keep getting better as it ages.
...my improved Pre 5.
The MET1 has 2 sets of 6-channel inputs, 4 pairs of 2-channel inputs, NO digital processing whatsoever, and an ambience-recovery mode for 2-ch. inputs that works VERY well. It's been discontinued and can be found, at least a few months ago, at very attractive prices.
