I had a couple of C80's over the years that had similar problems. Both of them were problems at the rca input jacks and the had problems with the solder joints at the rca inputs. What i assume had happened is the previous owner(s) pushed them back into a cabinet and the cables made contact with the back of the cabinet stressing the joints. Might try checking there. Best way to check it is to move the input cables slightly to see if it gives your signal back. If so, you have found your issue. Good luck with your search.

Thanks. Checked that. All is O.K. and solid with the soilder conmections. I also discosvered that when I push in the "Tone Bypass" button, it also pops.
Interesting thing with one of them was it would play fine when you first turned it on, then after the unit warmed up a bit it would start cutting out. Problem with the solder joints didn't come out until it was up to temperature.

Thanks again. I resoldered the connections - they are solid. Any other thoughts as to what component inside would respond to a tap on the side of the unit or how to better troubleshoot this issue? Obviously something is either loose or grounding out the left side connection.
Sorry, you have about reached my limits with the electrical stuff. Just wanted to pass on some of the issues i had come across so you had a starting point. There are some diehard Yamaha guys on one of the other audio forums i frequent that definitely could get you started on the right track. Not sure if it is cool to mention other forums here or not. The preamps still are one of my favorites even with their issues.
