My perfect combination for my LS5 MKIII is Amperex PQ 7308 white labels in the first two spots and Amperex white label halo getter Holland 6DJ8s in the other six. The two 7308s really tighten up the wild sounding 6DJ8s if you use more than two 7308S the sound starts to get boring.
Which PQs are you using? I have USA PQs, and dont really like the sound much - sounds dull and closed in. The holland E188ccs, to me, are much more real sounding, especially in the vocals.
The US Amperex PQ 7308 white labels. You are correct if you were to use them in all eight slots but if you use them in just the first two slots it firms up the base (and more of it) and the mids and highs are more controled (more definition, air between instruments, better soundstage etc.)
I think I tried them in the first positions. Did you try any Siemens e188cc or e88cc tubes. I found them to have a very good bass, and a lot of treble/air detail, but all Seimens gets too lively and detailed, and unreal.
BTW, on my DAC3, I used Holland e188cc (Dario Miniwatt labelled) in the first position, and they are amazing there.
