Return to K&K Audio / Lundahl Transformers
12.42.184.3
Why can’t I get this transformer to work in this player when I’ve used it successfully in Sony and Pioneer players? The Oppo uses a CS4360 voltage output DAC, however it is single ended and not differential like the other DAC chips I’ve connected the 1527XL to.No matter how I hooked it up I either get loud buzzing or distorted music with no bass. Can this transformer be used with this DAC and if so, how do I connect it.
I’ve included a link to the DAC data sheet. Thanks for your help.

I was contemplating on doing the same thing for the Dv981/983. Do the sonics sound better with the CS4360 tied to the transformers with coupling caps ?

A cursory look at the datasheet reveals that it is a budget single supply 6 channel DAC with single-ended outputs, so there is DC on the audio output lines. The transformer is therefore saturated when connected directly and the sound is distorted. You can cure the problem by interposing a coupling capacitor between the DAC analog output and the transformer primary. There is no way to use the reversed polarity of the differential connection (because it doesn't have one!) here to cancel the DC in the core like you could with the others. Perhaps it's too blunt to say that this cheap CD player isn't worth the trouble, but that would be what I would have said had you asked. :=))

Fair enough. That's what I needed to know. I'll drop some coupling caps in and see what happens. Thanks for the help.
