I have no idea how it operates, but, Holy Cow does this amp sound great! Even with the Alps pot that gave me fits. I did make my own "co-ax" with 18 ga solid core to get a bite on the solder tabs That really helped. Also made the ground hookups much neater.
It only comes out when I do fine work like soldering or carving wood but I have a "gross tremor" in my hand that makes this stuff a challenge. I especially like the way the RCA input came out:
I'm listening to Patricia Barber "Cafe Blue" for the way these 40 EL-34 watts display the drum kit. Oh My! MUCH better imaging than the 2A3 Paramours; the JBL Altec system really likes the watts.
It get's better, right? It's great now!
$600 for this? Biggest bargain I ever got.Oh yeah, Hey Brian, when is it okay to get Ella off her back?

This will be one for the Gallery too.> Oh yeah, Hey Brian, when is it okay to get Ella off her back?
Now's the time to give the lady some dignity.
So I take it you like the Ella. I've been looking at the Ella, the Billies, and the Paramour. My speakers are inefficient, something like 86db, and need more than 3 watts of the Paramour, but maybe 9 wpc is OK from the Billies. The Billies cost more, and if they don't work it would be a lot of money down the drain, or having the hassle of selling something that is not factory built. The Ella has the power and costs less, but isn't audio nirvana like an SET amp.I've been going around in circles with this for a couple of months now.
One question for Brian. Is the design much different from the classic ST-70? Or is it just using newer, possibly better parts. I'm new to much of this and get the feeling the push-pull amps all have the same basic design. You can barely get an ST-70 on E-bay that'll cost less with all of the mods you'll probably want.

My vote is for the Ella wired for triode operation. My B&W CDM1SE's are approx. 88dB efficient and I get plenty volume, plenty dynamics and improved sound over the standard setup. Mod is very easy and reduces power to about 15-20 Watts. Lots of other mods to keep you interested if thats your thing.
I compared the circuit to others in the Triode Electronics site and it closely resembles the "Williamson" circuit from - the '50's, I think. There's nothin' new under the sun.

> Billies.I doubt it. I find around 5 Watt just right with Speakers that clock in near the 100db/W/m mark. That means you would need in the region of 100 Watt with your speakers for realistic levels. Now you can likely give up a few db but even so, giving up 6db will only get you down to 25 Watt needed.
I suspect the Ella is nearly the only option.
One hint though, if you are okay with your fingers, you should be able at a later date to convert Lady Ella to use 300B Output Valves (it's a bit of work but not that difficult).
On the other hand, how about building a pair of Adire HE 10's, adding an active Sub and a pair of Billies plus Jango passive Transformer Preamp.
Okay, that is the better of $ 2,500 spent but such a system will pretty reliably sound stunning, not just good. Simply see if you can sell your complete existing stuff and go for the big league. In the long run I think there is way more milage that way.
I'm not giving up my speakers. They're a just built pair of Proac 2.5 clones. If I'd done this the other way, or took SET into account as a possibility, I'd have considered something else.
Hi,> I'm not giving up my speakers. They're a just built pair
> of Proac 2.5 clones.> Its sounding like the Ella would be the way to go.
Yes, on the original 2.5 I also would not recommend anything lower powered. In fact, I'd say monoblocking a pair of Ellas might be called for.
Easier than the 300B conversion is converting to 6B4Gs. Since you already have the octal sockets and 6.3V heater windings. The sovtek monoplate version allows for higher plate voltage and dissipation than vintage, so thats a help. The driver and bias circuits need to be modified, but its fairly simple. And because of the pinouts, it'll be possible to swap between the DHT and your favorite pentode when you need more power. I'll probably post a write-up on this mod in the near future to make it easy for any Ella owners that wish to experiment.

Congrats on the completion!
Some same questions here but only as regards to whether or not I can even hear the difference between SET and PP with my (regretably) very damaged ears. It's all relative I think? You can always get rid of the inefficient speakers and get some 604-8K's, then the low ouput will matter less. I really want to bi-amp so then 2x the outlay. What to do eh?
