Not in 1933 it wasn't! More than that the Dollar (and the Euro) both continue to slide. The US has lost its hegemony and what overcame Rome, Egypt, France and the UK is on our menu. It is to be expected, it is the nature of history which is cyclical.

As for REIT's, they are the least weak but the real performance for 10 years now has been in Gold and Silver. Gold futures and options even more so. Just keep a very, VERY watchful eye on them.

As for spending the gains on stereo equipment? If the riots in UK, Paris, Egypt, Syria et al are a harbinger of the future you might be better off buying a m134 (modern Gatling, 6000 rounds per minute) to protect what you own. But, since citizens can't own them, I cannot advise it.

A good security system is something you can buy, however. My system has irreplacable gear and it is secured as well as I can. $50,000+ turntables and $6,000+ cartridges certainly qualify for a security system.

Don't think we are immune to the violence, which almost always degenerates into an out of control, drunken Frat party. We had tanks in the streets of Washington in the 1970s (how soon we forget!) Protect high value gear. Then, after that, buy more.
