I have an old K6 266 PC as server with a 256gig Seagate running linux (Damn Small Linux) with slimserver. Cat5 to listening room.

Fanless miniITX system also running DSL and squeezeslave (SqueezeBox emulator) to optical USB cable (powered from DIY linear supply) to DIY USB DAC.

DIY SS preamp, DIY tube amp (aka space heater) and DIY Lowther speakers.

I recently acquired a real SB3 and can also run that with direct I2S out to the DAC which feeds the master clock back to the SB3. The problem is there seems to be some firmware issue that applies some attenuation to the bits going to the DAC (hence to my DAC) even when the volume is full. So I'm back to USB until I get that straightened out.

The old 266 server runs great under linux, it can easily handle audio stuff. Backup is a little cumbersome, I put a USB drive onto the miniITX and mount the server drive over the network and backup that way.

So far everything is ripped to wav by either EAC or cdparanoia. I started with EAC then switched to cdparanoia on the server. The biggest problem is no tags, its getting to be a problem, I might switch to flac for that.
