It turns out that upwards of 100 or so of these revolutionary plasma headphones were sold in Europe, but you certainly don’t see any on Audiogon. The PlasmaSonic1 a corona discharge design and sold by Audio Reference, operated on a voltage of + / - 3Kv with the electrode grids for the modulated audio signal being composed of a mesh coated with a carbon grease. The mesh electrodes were protected, (along with the listener) by a second set of grounded mesh screens. The emitter was a double sided point source, and apparently was the source of the problems associated with the short life of the plasma cells; sputtered deposits on the inside of the cell, along with corona instabilities. Still this has to be one of the most fascinating designs in audio equipment. As far as the frequency response goes it was extremely flat from 20hz to about 15khz with only a slight wrinkle in the response between 15khz to 25khz. Fairly impressive performance for such a small point source transducer. It must have been similar to having Hill Plasmatronics for your headset.
