Hi folks, long time no post.
I had a pair of Acoustic Zen Matrix Ref (Version I) that I tried in a system put together in 2002 that I never got around to selling.
I just got a Panasonic 50" Plasma 720p for the family room (where the stereo also is). Connecting the RCA out from the TimeWArner cable box into my passive pream, using the Matrix cables yields a really objectionable sound -- lost bottom 50hz, thin, annoying upper mid and highs (very revealing)... just completely out of balance. I don't remember the Matrix sounding this way at all when inserted into my audio chain in the past. I do remember it lacked a bit in 20-50 Hz, and accentuated the upper mids some, but in a livable way. I believe they fixed this slight imbalance (mostly) with the Matrix Ref II version in late 2002.
Now, I have a reasonably revealing system... FT Audio passive preamp -> Luminous Audio Synchestra Signature RCAs -> Marsh A200 SS amp -> Ensemble Megaflux speaker cable -> Sonus Faber Signum speakers + REL Strata II sub.
Still, the sound is so poor going from HD DVR -> Matrix -> passive preamp that instead I am using Tara Labs Prism 11 ($25 per pair retail) (really chokes the upper mid and highs) into the Plasma as a tone control, and then the Matrix out of the Plasma into the preamp. This is a good sound. The matrix livens up a pretty dead sound imparted by the Prism 11s and boosts the presence region (upper end of human voice).
Is it possible that the Motorola's D/A converter is *that* bad that in combo with the Matrix makes the sound unlistenable? I actually prefer the sound out of the display's built in speakers to the nastiness I get from the RCA out into my stereo system.
If I buy an HDMI cable into the Plasma, would the D/A converstion then occurin the Plasma, possibly resulting in a more pleasant sound?
I'm new to plasmas and digital, but all I can guess here is that the RCA out from the DVR really sucks.
