I have had very good results with the Conrad Hoffman protractor by printing it onto a self-adhesive (matt) transparency and sticking this to a white vinyl LP. Attaching it to an LP helped to minimise inacuracy at the spindle, while the white background facilitated the job of adjusting the tonearm till it traced the arc.
The Conrad Hoffman protractor can be used in conjunction with a pivot to spindle trammel like the one supplied with the Feickert Protractor. This can be placed over the spindle to pivot lines printed on the protractor, thus killing two birds with one stone: (i) it allows you to set the exact pivot to spindle distance (assuming that you are using an arm - like an SME - that allows adjustment of this), and (ii) it ensures that your protractor is correctly placed for alignment at the null points.
The arm which I use is the SME V and I had the problem of accommodating a cartridge with a non-standard mounting point to stylus tip distance (Benz Ruby). Using Conrad Hoffman's template I was able to generate a protractor for the specfic effective length of the SME + Benz combination as measured.
