Distortion is distortion. What difference does it matter where on the record it occurs.
Regardless of your alignment, there can be only two points with zero tracking error distortion. I believe those two points should be placed in such a way as to minimize overall tracking error distortion within the modulated groove envelope. That can be accomplished only with Löfgren's "A" alignment methodology.
Stevenson's alignment produces greater distortion in-between the null-points for a longer period of time. Furthermore, by placing the inner null-point exactly at the innermost groove, RMS distortion over the last centimeter of modulated grooves is significantly greater than from Löfgren's "A" alignment. This is because the slope of the distortion curve is quite steep at the inner groove area and placing the null-point in the middle of the last centimeter will yield lower overall distortion than placing it at either end.
Löfgren's "B" alignment produces the longest period of low distortion in the middle of the record at the expense of greater distortion for a short period of time at the beginning and the end of the record. Distortion at the end of the record is considerably higher with Löfgren B.
Best regards,
John Elison

- You can also move null-points without altering effective length or mounting distance by changing offset angle. /nt\ - John Elison 16:50:53 05/1/11 ( 0)
