....when you move them you alter overhang/effective length. Assuming of course that mounting distance remains static per some manufacturers spec.

Unlike SME, many tonearms, perhaps --most-- tonearms, indicate a mounting distance either directly by stating it as such, or indirectly by noting effective length and overhang. Where mounting distance = effective length minus overhang.
