The mute-switch shorts out the audio conductors, while the plastic gear is turning, so that the sound doesn't go to the amp. It is activated by twin strips of silver-plated metal, that ride on a ridge of the plastic cam. The springiness of these strips park the gear, at the end of an automatic cycle. This may, or may not be a problem. I own two big-brothers of this model, and know them very well. You can E-Mail me for help, if needed. Be sure to put a line in the box labeled 'subject', so that I don't think that you are spam.
And never lubricate the cam gear. It will foul up things, unless you are coached on how to do it.
