A zener or VR tube, connected across the supply following a series resistor, is a shunt regulator. Trouble is, there are limits to the current variability that such a shunt regulator can tolerate.

But how about if the zener or VR is used to control a MOSFET source follower by connecting it to the gate, with the drain connected to the power supply and the regulated output being taken from the source? There will be no voltage gain to cause noise, such as there would be in a traditional series regulator, so can this MOSFET source follower arrangement be considered as a beefed-up shunt regulator, or have we strayed into the polluted waters of series regulation?
