Sensitivity at a single frequency is slightly better than nothing and satisfies those who want or think a single number is "enough". Maybe like the gas mileage number doesn't tell much about driving a car.

What actually supplies real information is a response curve taken at say 1W 1M or at any other power and distance so long as it is stated.

That way if say your interested in using the driver as a woofer, you can see what it's sensitivity actually is in the range your going to use it.

"in room" measurements are getting back to much less informative because the variability between rooms is so great.

That is why half space or full space measurements are used for actual performance data, those conditions are universal and repeatable.
