Consider the somewhat-famous saga of the Motorola "Tunnel Reflex" speakers, some of which contained a version of the Foster (Fostex) FE-103's with big AlNiCo magnets.
I always investigate small, old Japanese speakers when they show up at the town dump.
Another example of a small, cheap speaker that sounds far better than it has a right to is the Sansui SP-30.
