I use no preamp. My CD player has an quality analogue volume control (Mark Levinson 390S) so the signal goes straight into the power amp. I have Avantgarde Uno speakers (101 dB) so 6 watts is more than enough. In fact I had the optional volume control on the PX-25 and kept this turned down a bit as the amp has relatively high gain. Even so, I rarely had the output from the CD player at more than half maximum, so was probably only ever supplying 3 watts to the speakers! The amp was dead quiet - quieter than the EAR (which wasn't bad) and MUCH QUIETER than a GRAAF power amp.
