I think I read someplace that Magnepan originally developed the mini-Maggie for VIP rooms at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. (Coincidentally, I'm looking at that hotel out my office window now) While they seem to be a bit hesitant to market them that way, they do seem designed to fill modest rooms with sound - I bet your living room could be made to sound quite good. I'm not sure what they drive them with at the Mandalay Bay, but you might call to find out.
Another consideration is that (as I understand it), most of the power of a speaker is needed to drive the low frequency. So, maybe you would need to worry less about driving the speakers, and more about the woofer. The woofer is essential the bass section from a 20.1, right? Since driving that woofer is most of the work that is required to drive a 20.1, I'm thinking it's something you'll need to take seriously.
