review of Chris VenHaus’ DIY Silver Interconnects

Best I’ve heard. That’s it, now go and get them.
Ok, you want the whole story... If you are familiar with Decware’s amps, they have a reputation for being transparent. I own a 6 watter dual mono with double tube rectification, driving alnico 10 inch full range Audio Nirvana speakers ( I use Duende rings on the 4 signal tubes).. My source is a Cayin tube output cd player. An isolation transformer feeds a ps duet power conditioner. Hospital grade plugs and sockets all through. The sound was fantastic before these new interconnects. I was sure that at this stage I could only bring about marginal improvements to the sound, or ‘changes that are merely a matter of taste’. My assumption turned out to be dead wrong.
Upon first audition I was surprised by the change in the frequency spectrum, it was way out there compared to what I was used to. I thought : oh dear, these must be far from neutral.
A few hours later I returned to the listening chair and realized that nothing was missing from the said spectrum. Highs, mids, lows, they were all there. The pessimist I am relaxed into the possibility that these IC may ‘at least sound decent’ and slowly started noticing just HOW they sound. What struck me first (and knocked me out) was the level of detail. No, wait, I think it was the layering, or perhaps they go hand in hand. And the accuracy of the bass. Someone wrote in a review here that lean systems might not benefit from these, or something similar. Mine is on the lean side, but these interconnects made the bass more present and more articulate.
To give just one example: Ensemble Accentus, playing Sephardic Romances (on NAXOS) is a pretty hard-to-listen-to recording on not-so-good systems because of the recessed and delicate presentation, due in part to the number of (early) instruments used concomitantly. Well, to implement a well-known cliché, they were standing there in front of me, each with his/her own instrument clearly defined, even during those difficult passages when they all play loudly together. I could hear clearly the percussion marking the beat underneath the music, the usual cacophony was gone, gone, gone. Of course they stared back at me, with a ‘what, haven’t you seen people play before’ look on their faces. It was that intense.
I understand today why people write that they feel sucked into the music. I have used high quality interconnects for ever, but none have given me this feeling of immersion and satisfaction. Do you hear me people? NONE.
On a bunch of other CD’s I discovered numerous details that I simply had not heard before. Even though you may have read these phrases before in online reviews, they do describe important facts, which make all the difference between yet another interconnect and THIS interconnect, so if I managed to convey to you that this one might actually live up to its description as UP THERE WITH THE BEST, then I congratulate myself. And you, I almost forgot! Congratulations for making yourself one.
I am in it for the sound, but everything sounds so much better when you are dealing with someone who answers your emails promptly, even on weekends and if I remember well even at 2 am! Also check out Chris VenHaus’ photos.
PS: Making them was pretty easy, but I am relatively used to soldering and DIYing.

Product Weakness: none really. Let me find one...hmmm...maybe the fact that it makes me wonder if the SILver bullets and the more expensive silver would have made a difference... Wow, what a weakness!!
Product Strengths: Performance vs price. Performance fullstop. Immediate improvement in detail, coherence, layering, extension, you name it. Ease and fun of construction. Chris VenHaus selling it :-)
