So far (knock wood), I have not had an audio accident of that magnitude. However, I worry about having one nevertheless. My tube OTL monoblock amplifiers weigh about 80-90 lbs each. When I want to tweak them I have to carry each one of them down a flight of steps to my basement workshop. The chassis' are also so huge that I cannot see what's in front of me whilst traversing the stairs. One of my nightmares is dropping one of the amplifiers during the descent or tripping and falling down the stairs with it. This is why I "save up" ideas for tweaks and install them all at one workbench "sitting", about every 3-4 years.
As I age, I become more and more conscious of the weight of each unit in my audio system; there is going to be a point where I can no longer lift any of it. Sorry about your tonearm. At least it seems your tape recorder survived OK. (Monty Python: "Always look on the bright side of life".)
